Hailing from Tucson, Arizona—significantly located equidistant in the dusty interstates connecting El Paso, Texas to the expanse of Southern California’s Palm Desert—the stoner prog-rock outfit Baptista has released its debut full-length, Baptista Presents. Formed by bassist Mike Celi (formerly of aughts-era scream heavyweights The Bled) and drummer Kalyn Stalinski in 2014 as a heavy metal band that eschews the indulgences and extravagances of modern mainstream metal, the group’s ranks quickly swelled to quartet-size, adding two members who do double duty in the Tucson rock band M. Crane: vocalist/guitarist Nick Maskill and keyboardist/guitarist Kyle Rosas. In the context of Baptista, Maskill’s haunting vocals—which have garnered comparisons to the late Jeff Buckley—provide a handrail into the kaleidoscopic melodies and labyrinthine beats supplied by the instrumentalists. And this is where the midway point between El Paso and the Palm Desert begins to make sense: almost immediately after debuting live and since, Baptista was positively described as the meeting place of El Paso post-punk prog-rockers The Mars Volta and SoCal standard bearers Queens of the Stone Age. While that doesn’t exactly do justice to Baptista’s primal and intricate knotty arrangements, it does give the listener an idea where their journey is beginning. And with the release of their brilliant debut, Baptista Presents, these Tucsonans are poised for a breakthrough into modern rock’s vanguard.
